What is NYSIA's mission?
NYSIA’s mission is threefold:
  • to build the software development industry in the downstate New York area;
  • to create a sense of community within the industry;
  • to assist companies and individuals within the “software community”

Who started NYSIA?
NYSIA was founded in 1992 by the New York City Partnership, a business organization affiliated with the New York Chamber of Commerce.

What is meant by "the software community"?
The “sectors” we have identified in the “software community” include packaged software companies; Information Technology firms; in-house corporate developers; and Computer Science academics. In addition, there is a large sector of service providers to the software industry including technology/intellectual property lawyers, accountants, training companies, executive search firms, and others.

Why should I join NYSIA?
There are many reasons to join NYSIA. Most companies join as a result of informed altruism, long-term strategic thinking, and enlightened self-interest. NYSIA also has a host of benefits designed to help members save money and network.

Member benefits include: free attendance to NYSIA SIGs and Monthly Meetings; free subscription to the NYSIA weekly HotWire; free advertising in the Member Directory; free job postings on the Job Listings page; wage reimbursement for hiring an intern through our Internship Program; reduced rates or access to free technical training; free 6-month subscription to Crain’s New York Business; access to healthcare and property and casualty insurance options; and many more! A full length of descriptions can be found at www.nysia.org/membenefits.cfm.

Some of our past events have included the New York Software Summit, the leading conference for New York City's computer-based industries. The Summit is a full day of educational and promotional activities that include several keynote addresses by major industry and political leaders. In addition, the Summit has several workshops that offer business and technical education. Another event, Buy NY, gives NYSIA vendor companies access to large corporate and government buyers.

How is NYSIA run? How is it funded?
NYSIA is a not-for-profit trade organization registered in the State of New York, run by a Board of Directors, elected annually by the membership. The board then elects a President, three Vice-Presidents and a Secretary-Treasurer.

NYSIA is funded through a variety of sources: membership dues, contributions from NYSIA sponsors, grants and other sources of income.

What is NYSIA's relationship with city and state governments?
NYSIA has a dual relationship with our local governments. We are an independent organization and our prime responsibility is to the software industry. In this context, we often lobby the State and City for legislation and policies favorable to our industry. At the same time, we believe in partnership between industry and government, and have worked closely with the State and City to build the industry in the New York region.

What is NYSIA's relationship with the Computer Science academic community?
NYSIA works with the various Computer Science departments, the New York Academy of Sciences, the CUNY Institute of Software Design and Development (CISDD) and others in academia to promote Computer Science research and education in New York.
